History of the house

The house , a typical Trier baroque middle-class dwelling , was built in 1727 . On April 1,1818 , the lawyer Heinrich Marx rented the house and on May 5 of the same year Karl Marx was born here .In October 1819 , the family purchased a smaller house in Simeonstrabe ( now no.8) where Marx lived until he left school in 1835 . A commemorative plaque marks this house .

It was not until 1904 that the actual location of the house in BruckenstraBe (now no.10) was identified . In 1928 , the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) acquired the house . Having previously served as a residential and commercial building ,the house was restored in the style of the 18th and 19th centuries in 1930 / 31 . The opening as a emeorial to MArx and Engels , scheduled to take place on May 5 ,1931 , had to be postponed due to the tense economic and political situation . In May 1933 , the house was expropriated by the Nazis who used it as their party headquarters and as the editorial and printing offices of their Nationalblatt. After World War  2 the SpD was given their property back .

German social democrats and an International Committee for the Reconstruction of the Birthplace of Karl Marx organized the restoration of the house as a memorial centre . On May 5 , 1947 , it was ceremoniously inaugurated . On the 150th anniversary of Marx's birth in 1968 , the house was consigened to the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and since then it has been used as a museum , library , research institute , and place of international meeting . Closed in 1982 for a renovation the museum was reopened on March 14 , 1983 , the 100th anniversary of Marx's death , with a more extensive and more modern exhibition . ( For further information see J . Herres , Das Karl-Marx-Haus in Trier , 1993 ) Between 1968 and 1994 more than half a million visitors were recorded . Since 1981 , the library and archives and other reseach facilities have been housed in a newly built study centre in close proximity to the museum . As from 1990 this study centre also ontributes to the new complete edition of the works of Marx and Engels (MEGA) .
